Tejon Exclosure 1

Tehachapi Mountains, Tejon Ranch, California.  Researchers finish constructing a "garden exclosure" on a south facing slope in a foothill blue oak woodland environment as part of a large experiment studying microclimate controls on tree species establishment.  Planted inside the garden are two oak species (Quercus douglasii and Q. kelloggii) and three pine species (Pinus sabiniana, P. ponderosa, and P. jeffreyi).  Inside the garden is a meteorological station and surrounding the garden is an array of 20 temperature data loggers gathering ground surface temperatures at ten-minute intervals.   The background of the image contains a similar garden and temperature array on a north facing slope.
